Mountain Threads FAQ

How does the service work?

Pick out your gear online and use the calendar to tell us your first ski day and your last ski day. Select store pick-up at check out to pick up your order from our store in Colorado or our Reunion Point in Connecticut, or include your delivery address to have your order delivered to your accommodations in time for your first ski day (delivery fees apply). In the evening on your last ski day, leave our gear in its bag or box at the front desk for pick-up or drop off at our store using our convenient Drop Box. For Reunion Point drop-off in Connecticut, simply call one hour before your drop-off, and we’ll meet you.

I’ve never skied before. What do I need?

You’ll want to be dry and warm. The essentials are waterproof, insulated pants, jacket and gloves. We also recommend goggles to protect your eyes against the dry air and the ever-present chance of snow. All of these pieces are part of our Performance Package, our most popular rental item. We have great discounts for multi-day rentals (3 or more days).

You’ll also want a warm base layer—long underwear and socks made of synthetics, wool or silk. Cotton is a no-no for winter sport activity. It holds the sweat against your skin making you cold. Our Hot Chillys brand base layer for Men, Women and Kids wicks moisture away from your skin but traps body heat to keep you warm, dry and comfortable.

On really cold days, you’ll want to add a mid-layer such as a sweater or fleece. We offer Hot Chillys fleeces for rent for Men, Women and Kids.

Last, but certainly not least, you’ll want to protect your head and feet. We have helmets and hats available for rent. Helmets offer better protection from falls. For your feet, you’ll need something waterproof and warm. If that’s not something you have at home, don’t worry. We have snow boots in Men’s, Women’s and Kid’s sizes.

What Kind of Gear Do You Carry?

We rent out top-notch jackets and pants from Columbia, Sorel boots, Hot Chillys base layer, Kombi gloves, Bula neck gaiters, helmet liners and balaclavas, Scott kids gloves and Bolle goggles. Our adult jackets have Omni-Heat technology which is designed to reflect your body heat back to your core, keeping you warm. We have nothing in our outerwear inventory more than two seasons old, so rest assured you will be swishing down the mountain in current styles and the latest technology.

Our outerwear sizing runs from 2T – 14/16 for Kids and from Small to XXL for men and women. We carry up to 4X in men’s pants.

We also offer comfort items such as humidifiers, boot and glove dryers, two-way radios, sunscreen, snacks and hand/toe warmers. Swing by our store to pick out what you need or browse our site and add it to your order.

How do I know what size I need?

Use our size charts to estimate your size by clicking on the size chart link below each item image. For kids we recommend going with their regular street clothes size. Our women’s jackets and pants run a little small, so if you are between sizes, go up to the next size. Men’s clothing runs true to size. We are always happy to talk through sizing on the phone with you to help you feel comfortable. We also recommend store pick-up (or Reunion Point pick-up in the Northeast) for your order, if possible, so you can try things on before you hit the slopes. If you need to exchange an item for any reason, we will work hard to get something to you as quickly as possible. An additional fee may apply.

Will I be charged for the days I pick up and drop off?

There is no charge for your pick-up and drop-off days as long as you are not planning to use the rental clothing on those days. We ask you to pick up in the afternoon and drop off before noon if possible.

Where is your store located?

Mountain Threads is a rustic log cabin with a tin roof in Golden, CO overlooking I-70, the main highway that leads from Denver to many of Colorado’s most popular ski resorts. Take exit 254 (Genesee Park) from I-70, and we are less than a half-mile east of the exit on Highway 40 which runs parallel to I-70 on the north side of the interstate. Come visit our store, and make sure your gear fits before hitting the slopes! Plus, we’d love to meet you.

If you’re in the Northeast, we’ve expanded to a new location for pick-up and drop-off. Our Reunion Point is conveniently located at the Service Areas off of I-95 near Darien, Connecticut. The Northbound Reunion Point is located between exit 12 and exit 13 heading North on I-95. The Southbound Reunion Point is located between exit 10 and exit 9 heading South on I-95. Alternate meeting spots can also be arranged. Just give us a call.

What are your store hours?

We staff our store Monday – Friday 9:00am-6:00pm, Sat. 8:00am-6:00pm, and Sunday 8:00am-2:00pm. If you are arriving outside of those hours, we are happy to meet you at the store for your pick-up. Just call us to arrange a time to meet, and we’ll be there! We’ve been seen at the store all hours of the day and night making sure our customers get the gear they need, so don’t feel bad if you flight gets in late or you want to hit the slopes super early. We will make it happen. The same goes for your Reunion Point in the Northeast. Just give us a call to make pick-up arrangements.

We are on-call 24/7 to help folks whose bags don’t arrive with them at the airport, so we answer the phone around the clock. It’s possible that we’ve been up until 2 am helping customers with lost bags get some ski clothing. If you have a question about our service, want to make a modification or place an order, we would love it if you could call during our normal store hours. If it can’t wait, we certainly understand and will be happy to help.

How far are you from the airport?

Without traffic, our Golden, CO store is approximately 45 minutes west of the Denver International Airport (DIA). If you are coming to our store for pick-up from the airport, we ask that you give us a call to let us know you are on your way. If we are meeting you after store hours, we may ask you to call again when you are 10-15 miles away.

Our Darien, CT Reunion Point for free pick-up and drop-off is located at the Service Areas off of I-95 (Northbound Reunion Point is located between exits 12 and 13 and Southbound Reunion Point between exits 10 and 9).

How does delivery work?

If you select delivery within the state of Colorado, your order will be delivered to your accommodations on the evening before or in the early morning of your first ski day. Deliveries to hotels can be picked up at the front desk. On your last ski day, please leave your rental gear with the front desk staff in the evening, and we will have a driver pick it up. If you are staying in a private residence or booking through a property management company, we will work with you in advance to confirm the location and time of delivery and pick-up. Colorado delivery is $15 each way. There is a discount on delivery for orders placed five or more days in advance. There is no discount for one-way delivery.

For deliveries outside of Colorado, customers will receive their items via courier at their hotel or pre-arranged delivery location on the day before your first ski day. When you are done, pack up your gear in the packaging it arrived in and attach the pre-printed return shipping label provided in your box. Tape up the box and leave it with the hotel front desk or at a UPS shipping location for pick-up. Fees for out-of-state delivery will be calculated at the time of shipment and any additional cost will be charged to the credit card used for your order. In order to get the best shipping rates, we recommend ordering at least two weeks in advance (more during holiday times), so we can keep your delivery costs as low as possible. Also, note, that to be environmentally sensitive, we will re-use boxes that are in good condition. Your shipment might come in an ugly but fully functional box.

How far in advance should I place my order?

We recommend placing your order two weeks in advance for regular season orders and a month or more in advance for peak season (Christmas and New Years weeks, Presidents Week and Spring Break). We will make every effort to accommodate you even if you call us the morning you are heading up the hill or if you just come to the store. We do carry a large inventory, but if we have advance notice it helps us better meet your needs.

Do you have any discounts?

Mountain Threads offers discounts for multi-day rental of our most popular item, the Performance Package. When renting for three or more days, adults pay $28/day and kids pay just $17/day for the package deal. This discount is automatically applied when you add the package to your cart.

We also offer discounts for large groups (more than 10 people). Give us a call to discuss pricing for your group.

What if I lose or damage one of my rental items?

Well, that’s a bummer for sure. If it’s something we can repair like a frayed cuff or scratched goggle lenses, we’ll charge a repair fee. If the item is lost or we cannot rent it again, we charge the retail price of the item to replace our inventory.
